2012 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

600 people reached the top of Mt. Everest in 2012. This blog got about 2,000 views in 2012. If every person who reached the top of Mt. Everest viewed this blog, it would have taken 3 years to get that many views.

Meet the NYC Geeks! Samantha L. Vella (Associate Producer)

Behind every great cast is a great Associate Producer. And it looks like GEEKS! has one of the geekiest producers in town, Samantha L. Vella. Read all about her!

Q: Who is your favorite Superhero?
Samantha: Tie between Iron Man & The Hulk

Q: What is your favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy movie?
Samantha: Flash (AAAAHHHH!!) Gordon – Sci-Fi (The Queen soundtrack may have a big role in that… my geek-dom spreads well into the music realm.)
Lord of the Rings Trilogy – Fantasy

Q: What makes you a geek?
Samantha: Is it my ability to recall the majority of Big Bang Theory quotes at the drop of a hat? My random spurts of walking like Charlie Chaplin? Random accents/ voices to entertain? My love of Renaissance and Baroque tunes? My Yoda key chain? The fact that I saw “The Avengers” in theaters 5 times?
You decide…

Q: What has been your favorite part of the Geeks experience up until now?
Samantha: The evolution the Geeks! personas on stage and getting to know a whole new crop of talent!

Q: How do you relate to your character? How are you different from your character?
Samantha: Well seeing as I “play” me every day of this production as an Associate Producer– pretty well! Love letting the Geek Flag fly free!

Q: If you could sit down to dinner with the characters from one show on Broadway right now, who would it be and why?
Samantha: Can I swap this out for TV cast? Big Bang Theory crew all the way — they live in “Nerd-vana” and hang with Wil Wheaton and Brent Spiner.
BAZINGA!

Q: What is your dream role to play on stage?
Samantha:Ouiser Boudreaux from “Steel Magnolias”

Q: Star Wars or Star Trek?
Samantha: Trek edges out by a tribble! I was exposed to Star Trek TNG as a wee one with my mom, so my first forays into geek-dom originate from there.

Q: Kirk or Picard?
Samantha: Picard, because he’s a bigger bad ass –”Shut up Wesley!”
Not to mention you don’t see to many internet memes surrounding Kirk. Although Kirk IS the OG!

Q: Ewoks or Jar Jar Binks?
Samantha: Me-sa no like Jar Jar Binks. Me-sa thinks Ewoks are the cutest!

Q: Marvel or DC?
Samantha: Given that I’ve seen The Avengers 5 times, Marvel! And I loves me some X-Factor.

Q: Zombies or Vampires?
Samantha: Neither, I’m going against the grain and saying Cylons!

Is she geeky enough for ya? Then come on out this weekend and see GEEKS! THE MUSICAL! We open at the Richmond Shepard Theatre in New York City tonight!!!

Meet the NYC Geeks! Zachary Conner (Jordan)

Zachary Conner (Jordan) finds love on the dealer room floor with Meredith Owens (Kerry). (Photo by Rocco Vitacco)

And the head of our merry little band of Geeks is Jordan, played by the delightful Zachary Conner. Let’s learn more about our chief geek.

Q: Who is your favorite superhero?
Zachary: Superman

Q: What is your favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy movie?
Zachary: Alien

Q: What makes you a geek?
Zachary: My undying love for anything and everything Smallville makes me a Geek. I can’t think of anything that is displayed with more love and pride in my apartment than my DVD collection of every season.

Q: What has been your favorite part of the Geeks experience up until now?
Zachary: Eli Bosnick plays Chip in the show and is an improv genius. I haven’t laughed as hard in recent history than when the two of us bounce ideas off one another during scene work. Rick has given us a good amount of freedom to explore moments in the show, which has made the entire experience incredibly fun.

Q: How do you relate to your character? How are you different from your character?
Zachary: Jordan and I are similar in that we both are a little neurotic. Obviously Jordan’s outbursts are a little more extreme than mine, but I definitely identify with some of his behavior. I’d like to believe I’m a little more sly when it comes to approaching someone I’m interested in, but I don’t know if it’s fair for me to judge that myself.

Q: If you could sit down to dinner with the characters from one show on Broadway right now, who would it be and why?
Zachary: Definitely the characters from Once. Preferably, I’d like to walk in on them having a jam session, like in the number “Gold”. That way I could just be that creeper in the back of the room with my feet up, eyes closed, and having a genuine emotional moment listening to them make beautiful music. It would be a delightfully cathartic experience.

Q: What is your dream role to play onstage?
Zachary: Younger Brother from Ragtime. Hands down. If not for the role itself, then for the fact that I would have the privilege of listening to that score every performance. Give me a couple of years. It WILL happen.

Q: Ewoks or Jar Jar Binks?
Zachary: Is it weird that I think Ewoks are incredibly freaking cute? If it wouldn’t mean enslaving a member of it’s own independent race and nation, I would totally have one as a pet. I mean, look at that face!

Geeks! opens this weekend! Come meet these fun, geeky folks. Be square, be there.

Meet the NYC Geeks! Meredith Owens (Kerry)

She’s just a girl at Comic Con. Meredith Ownes as Kerry scares the boys: Adam T. Biner, Jason Spina, Khallid Graham. (Photo by Rocco Vitacco)

She’s just a girl who can’t say no… to comic books! Kerry is the Femme Geektale of GEEKS THE MUSICAL and she is played by the lovey Meredith Owens. Let’s find out what makes her geek clock tick.

Q: Who is your favorite Superhero?
Meredith: The pink Power Ranger. The original. Her name was Kimberly. Also–the Ninja Turtles. They made that cartoon pizza look so delicious.

What is your favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy movie?
Jurassic Park. And anything Tim Burton or Pixar. I’m a big fan of any animated movie. Aaaand horror movies–LOVE me some Zombies.

Q: What makes you a geek?
Meredith: My ability to obsess and geek out over many a TV show/movie that involves anything ridiculously fantastical. It’s crazy what the imagination can create. Also, I love Zombies so much. Guess that makes me a geek–and I’m proud of it!

Q: What has been your favorite part of the Geeks experience up until now?
Meredith: Working with the cast and creative team! They have made this experience SO MUCH FUN!!! Not to mention I love getting to actually wear my own glasses and chucks and be nerdy and goofy onstage. This show is SO much FUN!!! Did I mention how much fun I’m having?

Q: How do you relate to your character? How are you different from your character?
Meredith: Kerry has a sweetness and naivete about her that I love and can surely relate to–I guess I’m different in a big way, because, um, I hope I don’t get fired, but, um….I have never seen a single Star Wars film. But I did my research, i swear. :o)
(I’d make a comment here, but I just passed out. -Editor)

Q: If you could sit down to dinner with the characters from one show on Broadway right now, who would it be and why?
Meredith: Oh my goodness, this is really hard–I think I’d have to say Peter and the Starcatcher. The ability of that group of storytellers, working together so intricately to put on that show every night–it was just thrilling to watch. They are a machine!! I’d LOVE to hear about that rehearsal process and see how different the show is every night.

Q: What is your dream role to play on stage?
Meredith: The Baker’s Wife in Into the Woods. I’ve had the chance to play her once, but would dig into that role over and over and over again.

Speed Round

Star Wars or Star Trek?
Hmm–Star Trek

Ewoks or Jar Jar Binks?
Jar Jar Binks
(I’d comment here, too, but I passed out again. -Editor)

Marvel or DC?
Gonna go with Marvel–was a fan of the X-Men at one point…

Zombies or Vampires?
Zombies 100% all the time.

Come geek out with Meredith and the rest of the GEEKS! crew this weekend at the Richmond Shepard Theatre. Previews Thursday. Opens on Friday. Be square, be there!

Meet the NYC Geeks! Eli Bosnick (Chip)

Eli Brosnick teaches the “Who’s Who of Doctor Who” as Chip in GEEKS! THE MUSICAL! (photo by Rocco Vitacco)

One of my favorite moments of GEEKS NYC so far was seeing in the production notes: “Eli will use his own sonic screwdriver for some bits.” I had no doubt we cast the right guy for Chip, the Doctor Who fanatic. Do we need to know anymore about Eli Bosnick. No. But we asked him some questions anyhow.

Q: Who is your favorite Superhero?

Eli: Wolverine or Punisher. Was there a crossover? Yes there was. Was it awesome? Yes it was.

Q: What is your favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy movie?

Eli: Got to go with Serenity. If you answered something else you are wrong and a bad person.

Q: What makes you a geek?

Eli: I’m a professional magician who collects comic books. What doesn’t make me a geek?

Q: What has been your favorite part of the Geeks experience up until now?

Eli: I have to say the cast and crew. Everyone is so incredibly talented and supportive. Its a dream work environment.

Q: How do you relate to your character? How are you different from your character?

I relate to Chip in pretty much every way. He’s a happy dude who fills with nerd rage at a moments notice. We love Tolkien, World of Warcraft, and Doctor Who. The only way we’re different is that Tennant is my favorite doctor but I forgive him. He’s young. He’ll learn.

Q: If you could sit down to dinner with the characters from one show on Broadway right now, who would it be and why?

Eli: Jesus Christ from Superstar because then if I were ever loosing an argument with anyone I could be like “Well in the lunch I had with JESUS he agreed with me.”

Q: What is your dream role to play on stage?

Eli: ARNOLD….CUNNINGHAM. People, this needs to happen.

Speed Round!

Star Wars or Star Trek?
Star wars (prequels don’t count) got to go with my first love. Its close though.

Kirk or Picard?
Picard!

Ewoks or Jar Jar Binks?
Ewoks. Jar Jar Binks didn’t happen. LALALALALALALA!

Marvel or DC?
Got to go with Marvel. Oh really Batman? You having a tough night? Well why don’t you call SUPERMAN who you KNOW to come handle every villain in Gotham at the SAME TIME in half a second.

Zombies or Vampires?
Zombies. This generation has ruined vampires in a way that a single interview couldn’t cover.

Do you have a favorite Doctor? Come to the show dressed as him, or any other cosplay, and get a $6 discount. We open this Friday! Be square, be there!

Meet the NYC Geeks! DaWoyne A. Hill (Emerson)

DaWoyne A. Hill (center) as Emerson gives the GEEKS a hard time. Also pictured: Khallid Graham, Megan Lacerenza, Adam T. Biner, Vickie Oceguera and Leanne Brunn. (Photo by Rocco Vitacco.)

DaWoyne A. Hill plays Emerson, the character we love to hate. Sounds like a sweet guy is playing our bitter queen. Let’s get to know him.

Q: Who is your favorite Superhero?
DaWoyne: My favorite Superhero is Captain America. Influnced by Chris Evans rock hard abs.

Q: What is your favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy movie?
DaWoyne: Avatar is at the top of my list as favorite. Unless Resident Evil counts and that beats it by a land slide. I love chicks kicking some zombie asses! So hot!

Q: What makes you a geek?
DaWoyne: I wouldn’t consider myself a true geek. I’ve never really gotten into any geeky stuff until Game of Thrones came out. Now, if any one says Game of Thrones I get so excited and its hard to make me shut up about it. I follow fan sites and blogs and check the status of production and all. Its just something about that show that brings out the hidden Geek in me. I know what it is actually, its because IT’S AWESOME!!! And I freaking LOVE dragons! Can I have one for Christmas this year please?
(We suggest you visit Santa at Macy’s this December. -Editors)

Q: What has been your favorite part of the Geeks experience up until now?
DaWoyne: I have to say my favorite part has been getting to know my geeky side. And also playing the complete opposite of my true self. Its fun to be the villain *insert evil grin and laugh*

Q: How do you relate to your character? How are you different from your character?
DaWoyne: I’m the complete opposite of my character. Emerson feeds off negativity and I stay clear of all things negative. Its so strange when we first started rehearsals I found myself making an effort to be nice and make sure everyone knew I was nothing like Emerson in real life. Its been a wild ride. I have to be careful to not let the two worlds collide

Q: If you could sit down to dinner with the characters from one show on Broadway right now, who would it be and why?
DaWoyne: Simba from the Lion King. I love that story and the show is so magical. Its one of my dreams to be apart of it.

Q: What is your dream role to play on stage?
DaWoyne: Simba from The Lion King

Q: Zombies or Vampires?
DaWoyne: Vampires all the way! I love me some zombie action but vampires are so sexy. I’ve been searching for one for years!! I mean seriously, who wouldn’t want to live forever with the perfect hair and skin?? This doesn’t include those sparkling losers from Twilight. I hate them! ;)

And we hate them, too. Thanks DaWoyne! Come out and see him cause all sorts of havoc at Comic Con in GEEKS! THE MUSICAL! Opening this Friday! Be square, be there.

Meet the NYC Geeks! John D’Arcangelo (Mel Tyler)

John D’Arcagelo (Mel Tyler) with Meredith Owens (Kerry). (Photo by Rocco Vitacco)

Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s John D’Archangelo! Who stars as has-been TV actor Mel Tyler. Let’s get to know him a little better.

Q: Who is your favorite Superhero?
John: My mom. She died when I was 22, but she never left me.

Q: What is your favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy movie?
John: Forbidden Planet. Loved Robbie the Robot.

Q: What has been your favorite part of the Geeks experience up until now?
John: The amazing people I am playing with. I am in constant awe of their talent and willingness to put up with my struggles with Musical Theater.

Q: How do you relate to your character? How are you different from your character?
John: I sometimes feel like a “has-been”. Poor, struggling actor. Sometimes remembering some past glory days. But I am different in that I was never really a star to start with, and I love ever minute of the struggle.

Q: If you could sit down to dinner with the characters from one show on Broadway right now, who would it be and why?
John: Evita, I guess. It is one of my favorite musicals and would love to pick their brains, and also to chat with Ricky Martin about a million things.

Q: What is your dream role to play on stage?
John: Would love to tackle Edna Turnblad in Hairspray. I already played George in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, which was very hard and a dream at the same time. Would like to try it again.

Speed Round!

Star Wars or Star Trek?
Star Trek because it is my childhood and I was in love with Captain Kirk, and the stories were more important than the special effects.

Kirk or Picard?
Kirk, hands down. More like the swashbuckle type of captain of sea-faring days. (Like Captain & Comander)

Ewoks or Jar Jar Binks?
Ewoks. They just so cute, yet fearless and brave.

Zombies or Vampires?
Vampires because they are sexy.

“All in the name of Universal Justice!!!”
