Meet the NYC Geeks! Khallid Graham (Greek Chorus)

Time for a few questions with the magical Khallid Graham a proud member of the Geek Chorus.

Q: Who is your favorite Superhero?
Khallid: Harry Potter. Some people may not consider him a superhero, but those people are wrong. Very, very wrong. He saved the entire world (Wizard and Muggle) from a magical Nazi. That’s pretty freaking super if you ask me.

Q: What is your favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy movie?
Khallid: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

Q: What makes you a geek?
Khallid: My extensive knowledge of all things Harry Potter. When I fall in love with something, it becomes my new reality. I haven’t lived in a normal dimension in 13 years. Other fandoms include X-Men, Star Wars, Charmed, True Blood, Power Rangers, just to name a few.

Q: What has been your favorite part of the Geeks experience up until now?
Khallid: Well there’s nightly Dunkin runs with Megan, being shunned for not watching Game of Thrones by DaWonye and Leanne, being bullied every night by Eli, learning sexy push-ups with Ayelet, discovering new notes with Vicki, and the list goes on. But I’d probably go with being stabbed in the eye by Mary as my all time highlight.

Q: How do you relate to your character? How are you different from your character?
Khallid: We’re alike in the sense that we both have a strong appreciation of Harry Potter. We’re also alike because we are die hard fans. We only disagree on Batman. BATMAN IS NOT A SUPERHERO! If I had a kabillion dollars, I could pretend too.

Q: If you could sit down to dinner with the characters from one show on Broadway right now, who would it be and why?
Khallid: I know it’s not on Broadway anymore, But I still have to pick Bonnie & Clyde. I’m totally obsessed with the music in that show.

Q: What is your dream role to play on stage?
Khallid: Scar in Lion King. Who doesn’t wanna be Scar?

Speed Round!

Star Wars or Star Trek?
Star Wars. When I’m not a wizard, I’m a part-time Jedi.

Kirk or Picard?
Picard. Professor X all day!

Ewoks or Jar Jar Binks?
Ewoks. Kick ass teddy beard. What else could you ask for?

Marvel or DC?
Marvel. No explanation needed.
Zombies or Vampires?
Vampires, BUT NOT THE SPARKLY KIND!!!

Do you like Harry Potter as much as Khallid? Cosplay your favorite Harry Potter, or any other Geeky character, and get a $6 discount for the show. We open this week. More details at: http://www.geeksthemusical.com

Meet the NYC Geeks! Danny Moreno (Trey)

Trey, the artsy bi-guy, played by Danny Moreno. (Photo by Rocco Vitacco)

Our sometimes shy bi-guy, Trey, is played by Danny Moreno, who makes his NYC debut with GEEKS! Woo hoo! Let’s learn a little more about him, shall we?

Q: Who is your favorite Superhero?
Danny: Nightcrawler! A teleporting acrobat with indigo fur and a prehensile tail? Come on, he’s your favorite too.

Q: What makes you a geek?
Danny: I’m pretty much the epitome of the neo-geek. Animated series, CD-Rom games and trivia, and Wikipedia are my sources of geekdom. I had an old X-Men computer game on CD-Rom. It wasn’t so much a game as it was an electronic comic with character bios and fun facts. I was about 7 or 8, and I’ve been hooked ever since.

That, and a few dozen pairs of superhero themed underwear…

Q: What has been your favorite part of the Geeks experience up until now?
Danny: This cast is a blast! Yes, that rhymes, and yes, it was intentional.

Q: How do you relate to your character?
Danny: I went through a “bi phase” too… Back in the 6th grade. It lasted maybe two weeks before I bought my one way ticket to Gay town.

Q: How are you different from your character?
Danny: I’m definitely not as dramatic… Right? RIGHT?!?

Q: If you could sit down to dinner with the characters from one show on Broadway right now, who would it be and why?
Danny: I don’t eat. But I would LOVE to have an open gym session with the characters of Bring It On. I have dreams of being a flyer!

Q: What is your dream role to play on stage?
Danny: As cliche as it might be… Rent. Angel. Deal with it!

That, or Frankie Valli… In my wildest dreams.

Q: Star Wars or Star Trek?
Danny: Star Wars. Yoda is a bounty of wisdom and great quotes. Although I was a BIG Voyager fan…

Q: Kirk or Picard?
Danny: Picard. Can’t handle that accent…it’s just the sexiest. Plus he eventually played Professor X to perfection.

Q: Ewoks or Jar Jar Binks?
Danny: JAR JAR BINKS.

I’m sorry. I’m completing joking. Ewoks all the way. I used to call them Care Bears!

Q: Marvel or DC?
Danny: Marvel for their sheer vibrancy, inventive character design, and Stan Lee. DC for the high caliber animated movies and TV series.

Q: Zombies or Vampires?
Danny: Vampires. Sure, they’re both technically undead and they eat people… but at least vampires aren’t all obvious about it.

Good answers! Come see Danny and the rest of the GEEKS! gang in GEEKS! THE MUSICAL! Opens this Friday!!!

Meet the NYC Geeks! Ayelet Firstenberg (Audrina)

Ayelet Firstenberg plays tortured Goth Girl Audrina. Let’s see if we can get to know her a little better…

Q: Who is your favorite Superhero?
Ayelet: Xena. She’s pretty much the most bad-ass person ever.

Q: What is your favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy movie?
Ayelet: Say what you will about the plot, I loved Avatar.

Q: What makes you a geek?
Ayelet: As a kid I read Animorphs books religiously and on Saturday nights watching Xena and Hercules on TV was an unbreakable ritual for me and my sister. Also, in fifth grade my best friend and I would spend lunch hour creating and drawing up superheroins and villains. I still have the notebook to this day! Oh…also I played Magic: The Gathering…a lot.

Q: What has been your favorite part of the Geeks experience up until now?
Ayelet: I love the cast and creative team. We all get along really well!

Q: How do you relate to your character? How are you different from your character?
Ayelet: I play a tortured, angry goth…I’m pretty much the opposite of that, I’m always laughing and smiling!

Q: If you could sit down to dinner with the characters from one show on Broadway right now, who would it be and why?
Ayelet: Lion king. I would feed them hay (in my fantasy lions are vegetarian) and we would have a good shnuggle.

Q: What is your dream role to play on stage?
Ayelet: Sally Bowles, hands down. Its gotta happen, happen sometime! (See what I did there?)

Speed round!

Star Wars or Star Trek?
Star Wars. Ewoks and Yoda. ‘Nuff said.

Kirk or Picard?
Picard. I think Patrick Stewart is godly.

Ewoks or Jar Jar Binks?
Is this really even a question?
(Darn, she caught us. – Editor)

Marvel or DC?
Marvel. Xmen. Love.

Zombies or Vampires?
Neither. I like happy things!

Well, we love the way Ayelet plays the unhappy Audrina. Come watch her brood starting October 5th in New York City!

Meet the NYC Geeks! Maggie Conley (FemCon)

Our next featured NYC Geek is Maggie Conley. She is a FemCon who is also the understudy for Goth Girl Audrina. We asked her a few geeky questions.

Q: Who is your favorite Superhero?
Maggie: Underdog… “There’s no need to fear, Underdog is here!”

Q: What is your favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy movie?
Maggie: Jurassic Park… I’m not too ashamed to admit that I cry every time I watch that movie… Ok, I may be a little ashamed of that.

Q: What makes you a geek?
Maggie: I had Star Wars sheets on my bed till the age of 23. ‘Nuff said.
(So wait, is it bad if you have them at age 43? -Editor)

Q: What has been your favorite part of the Geeks experience up until now?
Maggie: This cast is hysterical. It’s an accomplishment for me to get through a run without breaking.

Q: How do you relate to your character? How are you different from your character? Well, my Maggie: FemCon character is a blogger who is constantly eavesdropping on the people around her. Likewise, I am incredibly nosy… I’m not a gossip (unless it’s really good dirt). I just like to know everyone’s business. On the other hand, there is no way I could every use my phone that much!!! My thumbs actually hurt by the end of a run!

Q: If you could sit down to dinner with the characters from one show on Broadway right now, who would it be and why?
Maggie: I know it hasn’t opened quite yet… But I’d want to sit down to dinner with Shelley Levene from Glengarry Glen Ross… But only if it’s Al Pacino playing Shelley Levene… I have a weird crush on Al Pacino.

Q: What is your dream role to play on stage?
Maggie: I actually have 2 dream roles. One is plausible. The other… not so much. I’ll let you decide which is which:
1. Florence from Chess
2. Effie from Dreamgirls

Speed Round!

Q:Star Wars or Star Trek?
Star Wars. Duh.
(Agree or disagree? Take our poll in the previous post. -Editor)

Q: Kirk or Picard?
Shatner all the way.

Q: Ewoks or Jar Jar Binks?
Ewoks. Those were some badass teddy bears.

Q: Marvel or DC?
Marvel. I’m an X-Men girl.

Q: Zombies or Vampires?
Zombies. My plan for the zombie apocalypse, get incredibly drunk and hope that they kill me quickly. I don’t run fast, I’ve terrible aim, and I have absolutely no survival skills.

What do you think? Star Wars or Star Trek?

Meet the NYC GEEKS! Leanne Brunn (FemCon)

As Geeks! The Musical in NYC revs up for opening night, I’m going to turn over the blog to the NYC cast so we can all get to know them a little better. We start today with Leanne Brunn. Take it away, Leanne:

Hi! My name is Leanne and I play a FemCon aka a female member of the Geek ensemble. My favorite superhero is Batman! Superpowers are cool, but I like the idea of a superhero that can actually exist in the real world. I’ll admit that although I know a lot about comic book theory, all I know about superheroes is from film, so that’s how I really judge it. The Batman movies are always my favorite, with the exception of Batman and Robin, that made me want to set myself on fire. But the Nolan trilogy really solidified the dark reality that I enjoy about Batman. Also the Joker is the best villain EVER!

My favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy Movie: Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. I don’t really think this need explanation.

What makes me a Geek: I get really excited about things I like. My top things to Geek out about are anything from Apple (with the exception of Maps), The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, and Musical Theatre. I am a huge theatre geek!

My favorite part of the Geeks experience up until now is definitely getting to know the cast and crew. Everyone is awesome and we all genuinely like each other! Everyone has varying degrees of Geekness. I love when we all fight about things like Game of Thrones and admonish non-fans. There’s a lot of laughter behind the scenes! It always makes rehearsal enjoyable.

How can I relate to my character? How am I different than my character?: My character and I are very similar. I am just as obsessed with my iphone as I appear to be in the show. We both play a lot of Temple Run. I’m not as mean in real life!

If I could sit down with the characters from one show on Broadway right now it would be?: The characters of Once, because then we could jam after, I’m also Irish so that would be fun.

My dream role to play onstage is definitely Kate/Lucy in Avenue Q, its why I began to study puppetry!

Bonus Question: Zombies or Vampires?

Definitely Zombies! Twilight has ruined Vampires for me. Apparently they went from Bloodsucking children of the night to brooding teenagers that sparkle. Zombies though?! I am so ready for a Zombie Apocalypse! I have seen enough Romero movies and Walking Dead Episodes to take them on! You can’t reason with Zombies! There is no pressure for them to be apart of society, they will just eat you! They don’t care if you are Kristen Stewart, they will just straight up eat you.

In A New New York State of Mind

Well, in just about a week, GEEKS! THE MUSICAL will open in New York City. I am still in disbelief that something I wrote will soon be a party of New York history (and maybe even make a little of its own). As cliché as it sounds, I love New York. As does most of pop culture. So here are some of my favorite New York moments.

The opening of Maude. Yes, we have once of the catchiest theme songs of all time, be we also get a trip through and out of the city. Same with The Odd Couple, which keeps us more in the heart of the city. Didn’t we all want to each lunch with Oscar and Felix? That is if we didn’t already have plans with Jerry Seinfeld and his friends at that unnamed Restaurant. Followed by coffee with our friends in Central Perks.

And when it comes to New York movies, Annie Hall stands out the most for me (even if it did beat out Star Wars for best picture). Yes, many of Woody Allen’s films take place in NYC, but Annie Hall seemed to capture it’s beauty and quirks. And it gets even quirkier with Mel Brooks’ The Producers. Hey, why didn’t anybody court me like they did Leo Bloom?

The opening of Breakfast at Tiffany’s had me wanting to eat danishes outside department stores. And shouldn’t we all be at a New York Holly Golightly party once in our lives.

On the opposite end is Cloverfield. In which New York is faced by its biggest threat since King Kong. From subway to high rise, these group of kids make escaping from terror seem almost fun.

And then there’s Marvel Comics. I can’t tell you how disappointed I was upon my first visit to New York when I discovered there was no Baxter Building. Or that Dr. Strange’s cool skylight was nowhere to be found. But who couldn’t picture Spider-Man web swinging from building to building. If the Marvel movies got one thing right (and most would agree they got more than one) is that they kept the movies set in New York City.

Now it’s our turn to take a bite out of the Big Apple. New York Geeks assemble!
